Wire Gauge Explained
We recommend using 18 Gauge wire in the installation of these underground fence systems for dogs.

Use 20 Gauge if:

  • For loose, sandy soil
  • Theyard has little vegetation
  • Thewire will be buried in low traffic areas

Use 18 Gauge if:

  • For rocky soil
  • Theyard has a lot of vegetation in it
  • Thewire will be buried in high traffic areas
  • Owners will be installing the wire above ground
Remember, even a small break in the wire will cause the underground dog fence to fail. Owners cannot purchase systems with 18 gauge wire at the local pet store, or through pet supply catalogs. Owners can only get 18 gauge wire through a select few internet retailers.
